SafeTalk is a proprietary training programme developed by LivingWorks Education. Historically, SPIIOW organized and supported SafeTalk sessions across the Isle of Wight to build community alertness. Please note: SPIIOW is not currently offering live SafeTalk courses. This page provides conceptual education and guides visitors to authorized LivingWorks providers and active alternatives.
What Is SafeTalk?
SafeTalk is a 3.5 to 4-hour training session that prepares anyone aged 15 or older, regardless of prior experience, to become a suicide-alert helper. Most people with thoughts of suicide invite help to stay safe, but these "invitations" are often subtle, indirect, or easily missed.
SafeTalk trains participants to move past common tendencies to miss, dismiss, or avoid signs of suicide. Helpers learn how to connect individuals with suicide-safer resources such as caregivers trained in ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), mental health crisis services, or emergency medical teams.
The SafeTalk "TALK" Steps
Tell
Notice when someone’s words, actions, or mood may be communicating distress. Overcoming the urge to dismiss warning signs as trivial or moody.
Ask
Ask directly, clearly, and without judgement: "Are you thinking about suicide?" Clearly framing the question so the person knows it is safe to speak openly.
Listen
Allow the person to express their feelings without interruption or rush to fix the situation. Acknowledging that their suicidal thoughts are serious and real.
KeepSafe
Connecting the individual to professional or formal intervention resources who can complete a safety plan and provide ongoing care (NHS 111, Samaritans 116 123, 999).
