SuicideTalk
Creating safe, honest spaces to talk openly about suicide, dismantle public stigma, and build compassionate awareness throughout the community.
Purpose of SuicideTalk & Dialogue Sessions
SuicideTalk is a structured introductory exploration designed by LivingWorks to invite communities to talk openly about suicide. Historically, SPIIOW championed these conversations to help Island residents discuss their thoughts, fears, and misconceptions about suicide in a safe, guided setting.
Why We Need to Talk About Suicide Safely
For generations, suicide was treated as a forbidden subject—spoken of in whispers, cloaked in shame, and hidden behind euphemisms. Unfortunately, silence does not protect anyone; instead, it reinforces the terrible belief held by people in distress that their feelings are intolerable and unmentionable.
When we talk about suicide in a safe, constructive way, we communicate clearly: "You can speak with me about your pain. You do not need to hide."
Normalising Help-Seeking
SuicideTalk frames seeking help as an act of immense personal courage. Reaching out for professional mental health support is no different than seeking treatment for any other severe physical health condition.
Compassionate Language
Language shapes perception. Avoiding outdated phrases like "committed suicide" (which harks back to when suicide was a criminal act) and replacing it with neutral, compassionate phrases like "died by suicide" or "experiencing suicidal thoughts".
Zero Harmful Content
Safe conversations never dwell on graphic descriptions, means, or methods. Safe discussions focus squarely on emotional support, warning signs, recovery, hope, and connecting individuals to active helplines.
Knowing Where to Signpost
Every participant leaves with clear knowledge of verified local and national referral pathways: NHS 111, Samaritans 116 123, Shout 85258, and local Island support sanctuaries like the Newport Safe Haven.
